Representatives of Northwest Missouri State University’s Student Dietetics Association recently presented a check worth $735 to members of the Ministry Center Board of Directors to assist the Nodaway County Backpack Buddies program.
The Student Dietetics Association raised the money Oct. 6 during its second annual 5k Community Fun Run/Walk at Northwest.
Backpack Buddies supplies backpacks and snacks to assist about 260 elementary students in Nodaway County who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Children in the program receive a backpack with nutritious, kid-friendly snacks on Fridays and return the backpack to their school to be refilled the next week.
David Weichinger, Nodaway County outreach director for Community Services Inc., noted that studies show students are able to better focus on learning when they come to school well nourished. In Nodaway County, 48 percent of children in elementary school qualify for free or reduced meals based on federal poverty guidelines.
Last year’s inaugural 5k Community Fun Run/Walk raised $670 for Backpack Buddies. That was enough to provide backpacks of food to five students for the entire school year.
