Campus activities office announces winners of Homecoming contests

Northwest Missouri State University capped its 2012 Homecoming celebration with an awards ceremony announcing the winners of competitions throughout the week.

Northwest celebrated its Homecoming week, “Superheroes and Villains,” Oct. 28 through Nov. 4, with an array of activities that included traditions such as the office decorating contest, variety show, 5K Chalk Run/Walk, International Flag-Raising Ceremony, parade and the Homecoming football game, which featured Northwest defeating Emporia State, 55-10. The University also welcomed back the class of 1962 during its annual Golden Years Society Reunion at the Northwest Alumni House.

During Thursday's variety show, Riley Ziemer and Candace Boeh were named Northwest's Homecoming king and queen for 2012. Ziemer is a senior business management and marketing major from Winchester, Kan., and Boeh is a senior elementary education major with a special education emphasis from Lenexa, Kan.

Additionally, during the University's sixth annual Homecoming Canned Art Contest Oct. 29, student organizations were challenged with building a display of perishable food items to be donated to the Maryville Ministry Center at the conclusion of the contest. This year, the Homecoming committee delivered a record 3,445 pounds of canned and boxed goods to the Ministry Center, nearly doubling last year’s total.

Putting a new twist on another tradition and taking an idea from other 5K events, the Homecoming committee organized its Homecoming 5K Run/Walk and recruited volunteers to throw chalk dust at the event participants as they navigated the course. The event raised more than $2,000 in proceeds that were donated to the United Way of Nodaway County.

The 2012 Homecoming Executive Board included Co-Chairs Dannen Merrill and Sadie Vorbrich, Secretary Taylor Teeter and Awards Co-Chairs Alvin Le and Emma Clark. Other committee members were Colin Porter, Hope Garrett, Taylor Neff, Christine Ferguson, Tristen Meyers, Aly Fiegel, Trent Jameson, Makayla Krenk, Katie Brentano, Kristen Cavaliere, Laura Herman, Riley Ziemer, Natasha Cook, John Belfonte and Jasmine Ramage.

The 2012 Homecoming competition categories and the winners are listed below. Their prizes are in parentheses.
