Northwest faculty member releases recordings of musical narrations
Northwest Missouri State University Associate Professor of Music Dr. Anthony Olson has released a new set of recordings dedicated to piano melodramas on a CD, titled “The Melodramatic Pianist.”
The disc, which features music written for piano and narration, includes works by Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Richard Strauss and Sergei Prokofiev’s famous children’s tale “Peter and the Wolf.” Olson recorded both the intricate piano parts and the narrations for each composition.
“The Melodramatic Pianist” is available through Amazon.com, iTunes, or by contacting Olson at email@example.com. Listen to Olson performing one of the tracks on the disc, Richard Strauss' "The Castle by the Sea," by clicking here.
In April, Olson teamed up with Northwest Professor of Theatre Dr. Theo Ross for an evening of live performances of several of the works featured on “The Melodramatic Pianist.”
Additionally, the new disc is Olson’s third in the last two years. In March, Olson and lyric soprano Ms. Eva Peng released “From Mazurka to Mélodie,” which pays tribute to 19th century musicians Pauline Viardot and Frederic Chopin. In 2011, he released a CD paying tribute to 19th century American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, titled "Got Gottschalk?"
Olson teaches piano and organ courses at Northwest, where he has been a faculty member since 2000.
