Student Senate announces record-breaking blood drive totals
For the second time in three years, the Northwest Missouri State University community has contributed a record number of units during a Student Senate-sponsored blood drive.
The Student Senate’s fall blood drive, which took place during the week of Sept. 24 on the Northwest campus, collected 268 units of blood. The total breaks a record set during a 2010 Student Senate blood drive when the Northwest community donated 262 units and earned the Community Blood Center’s Largest Blood Drive Award.
Through three blood drives sponsored by the Student Senate during 2012, donors have given 681 units of blood.
“Northwest has always been a great help to the Community Blood Center,” said Betty Tinker, donor recruitment representative for the Community Blood Center. “The blood drive is very important not only to the local hospital, but to the surrounding communities we serve, and Northwest has been a strong supporter of the Community Blood Center for many years.”
The Student Senate annually sponsors blood drives in cooperation with the Community Blood Center to boost blood supplies in northwest Missouri. The Community Blood Center is the sole supplier of St. Francis Hospital in Maryville.
Tinker noted the Community Blood Center must collect about 580 units of blood each day of the year to assure area hospitals have enough blood to benefit patients in need. It is estimated that three lives are saved with every unit collected.
“I wish more people would see the significance of donating blood,” said Rachel Wood, Student Senate civic service co-chair. “It’s a very noble and patriotic thing to do, and you're becoming someone’s hero. At our fall blood drive, we came close to collecting our goal of 300 units of blood, and we'll be reaching for a higher number in the spring.”
The Student Senate’s spring blood drives are scheduled for the week of Jan. 28, 2013, and the week of April 8, 2013, in the J.W. Jones Student Union.
