The Mollenhour family, of Harrisonville, was recognized as Northwest Missouri State University's Family of the Year Saturday, Sept. 29, during Family Day activities.
Sponsored by Campus Dining, the Family of the Year award is bestowed each fall during the University's Family Weekend festivities. The recognition comes with a $750 scholarship and other prizes.
Kimberly Mollenhour, a senior elementary education major, nominated her family for this year's honor. She is the daughter of Bill and Angie Mollenhour.
The family includes Gretchen Curly, a 2008 Northwest graduate; Martin Curley, a 2009 graduate; and Margaret Mollenhour, a 2011 graduate.
Kimberly has been active in the University Chorale and Tower Choir as well as Kind Individuals Dedicated to Students (KIDS), Gamma Alpha Lambda and the Student Missouri State Teachers Association. She has served as an Academic Resource Consultant in Hall (ARCH), and she received the Distinguished Scholar Award.
Martin competed in the long and triple jumps for the Bearcat track and field team and was a NCAA Division II national qualifier in the triple jump in 2009. He also was employed in Textbook Services. Gretchen was an anchor and producer for KNWT’s “Bearcat Update,” a Tower yearbook staff member and a resident assistant. The Curleys are members of the Northwest Alumni Association’s St. Joseph Chapter.
Margaret was a member of National Residence Hall Honorary and Gamma Alpha Lambda. In 2010 she served as the chair of the Heartland Leadership Conference.
Families are nominated by members of the Bearcat community or self-nominated. Applicants are judged on the family's commitment to Northwest, academic success, service and the family's consistent and sustained involvement over several generations.
