From “Hedwig’s Theme” to “Amazing Grace,” a cappella quintet Overboard has a full repertoire of music ready to rock Northwest Missouri State University Sept. 12. The all-male group is the opening act of the 2012-2013 Encore performance series.
Overboard will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Mary Linn Auditorium at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. The performance is co-sponsored by the Office of Campus Activities and the Student Activities Council.
“I think Overboard will be a really great way to start our series, partly because we have not brought an a cappella group to Northwest in recent history,” Northwest Director of Campus Activities Angel McAdams Prescott said. “They do all genres, so you can really appreciate the music from the ’60s and ’70s and The Beatles and early rock ‘n’ roll, too. If you like modern music, they do great renditions of songs by Britney Spears, Rihanna and Maroon 5. Just about anybody could really enjoy their music and sing along or tap their foot and enjoy the experience.”
Overboard’s sound is characterized by high-intensity vocals and tight harmonies over a crisp beat-boxed rhythm. Initially a street performance group formed in 2006, the Boston-based vocal ensemble soon found themselves in the spotlight; by 2007, Overboard had churned out two albums and earned a place in the top five finalists of “A Cappella Quest,” a competition produced by CBS’ “The Early Show” and top-selling R&B group Boyz II Men. Overboard has since released three additional albums, one of which is a holiday album that has received national attention and accolades.
Tickets are free for Northwest students, who pay a student activities fee as part of their tuition costs. Tickets for the public start at $13 for children and $23 for adults. They may be purchased at the Student Services Center, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, on the first floor of the Administration Building, or online at www.nwmissouri.edu/getinvolved/encore.htm.
The 2012-2013 Encore performance series is themed “Discover the Arts” and features six performances including a cappella and string music, a poet laureate, dance, acrobatics and musical comedy.
