Northwest Missouri State University, along with St. Francis Hospital and Health Services, will co-sponsor the inaugural Maryville Heart Walk Saturday, Sept. 15, to raise awareness about heart diseases and remember those who have been affected by it.
Registration opens at 7 a.m., and the walk begins at 8 a.m. in the circle drive in from of the Lamkin Activity Center. Participants may pre-register for $10, which includes a T-shirt. Registration on the day of the walk is $15.
Proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association.
Organizers noted the tragic impacts of heart disease on some Maryville residents over the last year and that curbing heart problems is on the forefront of the minds of community members.
“We are fighting the No. 1 and No. 4 causes of death in Americans – the No. 1 being heart disease and the No. 4 being stroke,” said Janet Murphy, a cardiac rehab nurse at St. Francis Hospital and Health Services. “An American will have a coronary event every 25 seconds and one will die every minute. A stroke happens every 40 seconds and one in 18 Americans will die. This is near and dear to me because close friends have died from heart disease. I’m dedicating my heart walk participation in memory of these friends at St. Francis.”
Individuals are encouraged to establish or join a team. Prizes will be awarded to teams that raise the most money as well as to individual participants. Additionally, Northwest employees can earn 5,000 points for the Points to Blue program.
The walk will happen rain or shine. The event also will include a “Survivor Walk,” health screenings, fitness booths and refreshments.
