The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in May 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt took the first step of this 24-hour walk around a track in Tacoma, Wash., raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society.
Since then, Relay For Life has evolved into a fun-filled event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.
Teams of Nodaway County residents will gather at Bearcat Stadium on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University from noon to midnight Saturday, June 2, for full day of relaying against cancer. Games, music and live entertainment will encourage people throughout the day and some teams will sponsor creative fundraisers at their camp sites during the event.
The event begins at noon. A cancer survivor’s and caregiver’s lap to celebrate those who have survived cancer, are currently battling cancer, or are caregivers to survivors begins at 6 p.m., and the Luminaria Ceremony takes place at 9 p.m. to honor the Maryville community’s cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer.
Joel Osborn, a cancer survivor and a Northwest football assistant coach, will share his story at 8:30 p.m.
Survivors and caregivers who would like to participate in the recognition ceremony are encouraged to stop by the survivors’ tent at the event between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Luminaria may be purchased for $10 by calling Nancy at 660.582.9645 or by visiting RelayForLife.org/NodawayMO.
