Venus Brown, membership developer and events coordinator for Northwest Missouri State University’s  National Public Radio affiliate, KXCV-KRNW, recently received a silver AMBIT award in the fundraising category from the Kansas City Direct Marketing Association.

This year’s AMBIT Award winners were chosen from among 62 entries in 22 categories. Besides the entry for KXCV-KRNW, three additional fundraising entries came from professional organizations.

Brown’s entry was an appeal mailed to members in December of 2010 with results tallied in 2011. The campaign consisted of a letter package that was developed and produced entirely in the station’s business office. The mailing netted a response rate of 11 percent.

“The thing about direct marketing is that it lets you precisely measure your results so you know how effective your efforts are,” Brown said. “What’s really nice about winning an award like this is that it acknowledges that what you’re doing is working.”

KXCV-KRNW relies on direct mail and on-air fund drives as well as underwriting from local businesses to raise funds and increase membership. Another fund drive is planned this month.

“Even though we have certain scheduled fundraising activities, we encourage everyone who listens to KXCV-KRNW to become a member at any time throughout the year,” Brown said.
