Northwest plans events to mark Enough is Enough Week

In conjunction with Sexual Awareness Month, Northwest Missouri State University will mark Enough is Enough Week, April 2-6, joining campuses across the country by engaging in a dialogue that raises awareness of societal violence.

The week is sponsored by Northwest Coalition Against Violence and coincides nationally with events sponsored by NASPA.

“This week is aimed to help people take a stand and speak up about violence,” said Jennifer Kennymore, health educator for Wellness Services. “Any type of violence can be prevented and therefore we can do something about it.”

During the first half of the week, the Northwest community is invited to participate in The Clothesline Project, a visual display in the J.W. Jones Student Union to raise awareness of violence against women. Participants will be encouraged to decorate a shirt with a representation of a woman’s personal experience with violence; the decorator may be a survivor or a person who cares. The shirt is then hung on a clothesline for display.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the Student Union Living Room, a Bystander Intervention Workshop will feature presenters discussing “the bystander effect” and how people can effectively intervene in potentially violent situations.

Additionally, the campus community is invited to participate Friday, April 6, in Denim Day, a national campaign designed to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault. Northwest asks people to wear jeans that day in support of the Children and Family Center of Northwest Missouri.
