Northwest Board of Regents approve contracts with bookstore, facilities management vendors

The Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents during its March 15 meeting by telephone authorized the University to enter into contracts with Barnes & Noble College Booksellers to manage its campus bookstore and with Aramark Management Services for comprehensive facilities management services.  

The authorization followed an evaluation process during which committees comprised of Northwest employees and students reviewed and analyzed multiple vendor proposals for both contracts.

Presenting the proposals to the Board, Northwest Vice President of Finance Stacy Carrick said both contracts offer financial and service-based advantages to the University. The bidding process also meets procedural recommendations addressed in a recent state audit.  

Both contracts will run July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2015, and include seven optional one-year renewals.

Carrick said Northwest values Aramark’s experience serving higher education institutions and its coordinated approach to providing services. She also noted Aramark will assist Northwest in addressing operational efficiencies and energy management.

Carrick said Barnes & Noble, which sells books and clothing among other items on the Northwest campus, offers products and services that students who were surveyed said are important, such as the ability to charge purchases to a Bearcat Card. Carrick added that Northwest’s textbook rental program makes the University a unique client for booksellers. 

In other business, the Board approved the renewal of an articulation agreement with Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, which allows Northwest students to dual enroll and earn degrees from both institutions. The Board also authorized the University to enter into a contract with RSUI Indemnity Company to provide directors and officers insurance and employment practices liability insurance.

The Board of Regents develops policy and has responsibility for sound resource management of the University, and determines general, educational and financial policies.
