The Northwest Missouri State University wrestling club held its place among the top teams in the country with a second-place finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Division II National Championship March 10-12 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The wrestling club, which went into the tournament as the defending national champion, scored 27 points and finished with a 10-10 record as a team. Wichita State earned 57.5 points to take the Division II championship.
“I am proud of the hard work, dedication and the personal commitment of each wrestler,” Club Advisor Dr. Tim Crowley said.
Travis Peter (141 lbs.) was the Bearcats’ top finisher, going 3-2 and advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Jordan Peter (165 lbs.), the wrestling club’s president and last year’s national runner-up in his weight class, entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, the highest of Northwest’s seven national qualifiers. He finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and two pins.
Blake Schoeninger (184 lbs.) entered the tournament as the seventh seed in his weight class, but went winless at 0-2.
The Bearcats started slowly, posting a 2-5 record after first round, but bounced back on day two as Jordan Peter, Danny Apgar (174 lbs.) and Preston Reeves (heavyweight) won by pins in the consolation round.
Apgar finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and three pins, while Reeves was 2-2 with two pins. Alex Freund (197 lbs.) and Nick Mckay (235 lbs.) rounded out Northwest’s national qualifiers.
The Northwest wrestling club entered the national tournament after taking its second consecutive Southwest Conference Championship Feb. 25 in Fort Collins, Colo. The seven wrestlers who qualified for the national tournament tied a Northwest club record.
The Northwest wrestling club was established in 2005 to provide students with opportunities to participate in organized wrestling competitions. It competes in the Southwest Conference, one of six conferences in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association.
