Governor appoints Ashton Raffety as Northwest student regent
Gov. Jay Nixon has announced the appointment of Ashton Raffety as student representative on the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents.
Raffety's term will end Dec. 31, 2013, or until his successor is appointed. He succeeds Joseph Barbosa, whose term expired.
Raffety, of Drexel, is a freshman business economics major and political science minor. He serves as the freshman representative on Northwest’s Student Senate and is involved with the University’s pre-law society. Additionally, Raffety is an Eagle Scout.
He is a graduate of Drexel High School, where he was a student council president and participated in the Missouri Boys State 71st Session. He also was a member of the school’s football, basketball, golf, baseball and quiz bowl teams.
Raffety anticipates graduating from Northwest in 2015. He hopes to become an attorney.
The student regent is a non-voting member of the Board of Regents. Raffety's appointment was confirmed by the Missouri Senate March 7.
The Board of Regents develops policy and has responsibility for sound resource management of the University, and determines general, educational and financial policies.
