With popular shows and movies like “Glee” and “Joyful Noise,” it comes as no surprise that interest in show and jazz choirs is growing, and Northwest Missouri State University will be the center of competition for regional and local show and jazz choirs Saturday, Feb. 4.
Northwest will host its Annual Show and Jazz Choir Festival beginning at 8 a.m. on the stages of the Charles Johnson Theater in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building and the Mary Linn Auditorium in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. The final performances begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Ron Houston Center. Following the festival, Northwest’s own show choir, Celebration, will perform.
“The Northwest Show and Jazz Choir Festival is a great opportunity for high school choirs to come and have a positive experience on the Northwest campus,” said Dr. Brian Lanier, associate professor of voice and choral music education at Northwest. “The University students in Celebration serve as hosts and ambassadors for Northwest throughout the day, interacting with the high school students and their teachers. It is a day of outstanding performances by some truly talented high school students around the four-state region.”
Twenty-four show and jazz choirs from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas are attending this year’s festival. The festival places emphasis on competition and a positive educational approach. At the end of the festival, the top choirs in each category are awarded trophies and an overall winner will take home the sweepstakes trophy.
The Show and Jazz Choir Festival has been an annual event on the Northwest campus for more than 20 years. The festival performances are free and open to the public.
