Northwest Missouri State University on Saturday, Feb. 4, will host the Special Olympics Missouri Northwest Area Basketball Tournament, which will bring more than 250 athletes from across northwest Missouri to Maryville.
Opening Ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. at Bearcat Arena. The games will start at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m.
Competition events will take place in individual skills, team skills, 3-on-3, modified and regulation basketball. People interested in volunteering to help on the day of the tournament should visit http://www.somo.org/. The public is encouraged to attend all events and cheer for the athletes.
Special Olympics is dedicated to improving the overall health and fitness of its athletes, not only through organized sports training and competition, but also by providing free health screenings through the Healthy Athletes program. All screenings are provided for SOMO athletes free of charge. A local physician will be on site to give free physicals from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Special Olympics Missouri is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 15,600 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports throughout the state.
