The Northwest Missouri State University wrestling club begins its defense of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Division II National Championship Friday, Dec. 9, with a home dual at Bearcat Arena.
The Northwest club will compete against clubs from Kansas State University and Iowa State University. The dual begins at 7 p.m.
The Northwest wrestling club, which was established in 2005 to provide students with opportunities to participate in organized wrestling competitions, rose to new heights last year as it took the Southwest Conference Championship in Arlington, Texas, and went on to claim its first NCWA Division II National Championship last March in Macon, Ga.
Eighteen students comprise this year’s club roster, including Jordan Peter (165 lbs.), last year’s national runner-up in his weight class, and Blake Schoeninger (197 lbs.). Both Peter and Schoeninger achieved NCWA All-American status, becoming the third and fourth wrestlers to accomplish the feat in the club's six-year history.
Peter, who serves as the club’s president this year, said the club hopes to bring another national title to Northwest and increase the number of All-Americans on its roster.
“Our goals are the same,” Peter said. “Last year, we kind of flew under the radar and no one anticipated us doing as well as we did. This year, we have a target on our back, and we have to stay humble by not letting our heads get too big but stay focused by being aggressive on the mat.”
The Northwest wrestling club competes in the Southwest Conference, one of six conferences in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association.
Dr. Tim Crowley is the club’s new advisor, taking over for Dr. Loren Butler, who had advised the club since its inception. Jason Sack is the club sport organizer.
In 2005, former Northwest students Chris Schwartz and David Nugent, who were passionate about the sport, submitted the application to start the wrestling club, which Student Senate approved.
As a student-organized club, the members are responsible for fundraising, recruiting and keeping a budget, as well as booking their own flights, hotels and tournament registrations when they travel.
The club has benefited from the generous donations of area businesses, families, friends and alumni who competed on Northwest's NCAA-sanctioned wrestling teams before the program was eliminated in the 1980s.
The club practices from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday in the Martindale Gym. For more information about the Northwest wrestling club, contact Peter at email@example.com.
