Talent Development Center moves to Owens Library

In an effort to help students better access the resources they need to be successful in their academic endeavors, Northwest Missouri State University’s Talent Development Center moved this week to the second floor of the B.D. Owens Library.

The TDC, which had been housed on the third floor of the Administration Building, is now located at room 232 of the library, near the Writing Center.

“Student are always studying at the library, so it will be easier for them to get the help they need,” TDC coordinator Linda Standerford said. “It’s a benefit to students that we’re pulling all of these resources together.”

In conjunction with the move, the University’s strategic research team, formerly known as the Office of Assessment, Information and Analysis, has moved to the space formerly occupied by the TDC.

The move for the TDC marks another enhancement to the B.D. Owens Library, which earlier this year celebrated a re-opening to commemorate a new look to its interior that features a greater emphasis on learner resources and collaborative areas.

The TDC was established to helped students navigate the rigors of college courses and includes a Supplemental Instruction program that offers extra help with peer tutoring groups for traditionally tough classes. The TDC is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and in September it welcomed former student-employees back to campus for a reunion.

Dr. Leslie Galbreath, Northwest’s director of academic and library services, was the TDC’s office manager when the program was born. Dr. Patt VanDyke, the TDC’s first director, authored the grant that led to the founding of the TDC in 1986.

Today, TDC staff members log about 10,000 hours tutoring the 3,000 Northwest students who use its services.

“We got to see the vision of what (VanDyke) knew it could be if we focused on students, taking them where they were and moving them forward,” Galbreath said. “We had to retrain the student body, and we had to retrain the faculty to think, ‘It’s ok to ask for help.’ It’s ok to say, ‘I’m not very good at this thing, but I can get better.’”

What started as a staff of 12 has grown to a staff of 45 to 60 people today that is mostly comprised of student employees who take great pride in their ability to help fellow students. TDC student employees also gain leadership skills and other tools they can carry into their professional careers.

“What we hear from them is how part of what they learned in working for the Talented Development Center is how helping other students, the responsibilities we gave them, the expectations we had of them continue to influence the way they work with their colleagues,” Galbreath said.

Looking back on the TDC’s first 25 years, Galbreath said, “To know that you might have been the one to say, ‘It will be ok, you can pass this class. You didn’t do as well as you could have done on the first exam, but we can help you get better.’ Those students completed the semester. They didn’t quit college that day. They stayed. So what does that mean times 3,000 times?”
