Students in Northwest Missouri State University's Department of Family and Consumer Sciences are hoping to make Thanksgiving brighter for some area families this year with the help of local basketball enthusiasts.
The department is sponsoring "Hoops for Giving," a three-on-three basketball tournament Sunday, Nov. 6, to raise money toward providing a Thanksgiving dinner for area families through the Maryville Ministry Center.
The tournament will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. in the Student Rec Center on the Northwest campus. Each team is guaranteed three games, with the third game deciding entrance to a single-elimination tournament.
The registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1. The cost per team is $20, and teams may consist of no more than four players, who must be Northwest students.
The public is invited to attend the tournament and cheer on the teams.
"Thanksgiving is a time of giving," said Samantha Bell, a senior child and familiy studies major from Indpendence. "The family and consumer science department, through a community service project, has given us the opportunity to make this giving possible. We want to allow others to be involved, making it fun for everyone."
