Dr. Stephen Town, professor of music at Northwest Missouri State University, traveled to Richmond, Va., where he presented an invited, peer-reviewed paper at the 2011 National Conference of the College Music Society on Friday, Oct. 21.
Town’s paper, “The Visionary Gleam: Intimations of Immortality by Gerald Finzi and An Oxford Elegy by Ralph Vaughan Williams,” discusses the cross-fertilization between the two composers, the meanings of their chosen texts, and the manner in which they structured their compositions.
A longer version of the paper will appear in his forthcoming book, “An Imperishable Heritage: Essays on British Choral Music,” to be published by Ashgate Publishing Ltd., United Kingdom.
Town joined the Northwest faculty in 1986 and conducts the Tower Choir.
