Five Nodaway County children will benefit from the efforts of Northwest Missouri State University's Student Dietetic Association, which raised $670 to support the Backpack Buddies program.
The Northwest Student Dietetic Association, on Sept. 17, sponsored its first Community 5K Fun Run/Walk to benefit Backpack Buddies, which promotes good nutrition in elementary students. More than 60 people participated.
"NSDA is pleased with the support from the community, and they plan to continue with this event next year," Sarah Rice, the organization's president, said.
Backpack Buddies assists about 240 elementary students in Nodaway County who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Children in the program receive a backpack with kid-friendly snacks on Fridays and return the backpack to school to be refilled the next week. Backpack Buddies supplies the backpacks and snacks at a cost of about $140 per child.
