Family Weekend to offer entertainment, football, fun at Northwest Sept. 23-25

Family Weekend 2011

Friday, Sept. 23

  • 1 to 5 p.m. - Department of Art Faculty Exhibit (Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building)
  • 6 p.m. - Alumni Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Northwest Alumni Association ($30 per person or $200 per table; reservations required; Student Union Ballroom)
  • 8 p.m. - Hypnotist Jim Wand, sponsored by National Pan-Hellenic Council (Charles Johnson Theater)

Saturday, Sept. 24

  • 6: 30 a.m. (check-in) / 7 a.m. (start) - 5K Run/Walk/Roll (Lamkin Activity Center Circle Drive)
  • 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Flea Market to support the Maryville Senior Center. (First and Laura streets, call 660.562.3999 for more information)
  • 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Pancake breakfast by Chris Cakes, sponsored by Student Senate ($4; Bell Tower)
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Bearcat Bookstore open (Student Union)
  • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. - Roberta Hall open house (refreshments provided; Robert Hall)
  • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. - Alumni House open house (Alumni House)
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Family Fun Fest (Free games and activities at College Park; in Student Union in case of inclement weather)
  • 11 a.m. - Campus Scavenger Hunt (Prizes awarded to each finisher; Centennial Gardens)
  • 11 a.m. - Bearcat Zone Tailgate ($6.50 per meal; College Park)
  • 1 to 5 p.m. - Department of Art Faculty Exhibit (Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building)
  • 1 p.m. - Northwest vs. Fort Hays State/Family of the Year recognition (Bearcat Stadium)
  • 8 p.m. - Murder Mystery Game, sponsored by Student Activities Council (reservations required; Student Union Boardroom)
  • All day - Fraternity open houses
  • All day - Family Weekend archives display (B.D. Owens Library)

Sunday, Sept. 25

  • Morning - Faith Services (Maryville community)
  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. - All-You-Can-Eat Brunch Buffet ($9.18 per meal; Student Union)
  • 1 to 3 p.m. - "Strut Your Mutt." (Beal Park, Seventh and Laura streets)
  • Register online at www.nodawayhumanesociety.org, at the shelter, or at the event. Adults with one dog: $15, children under 12 (accompanied by an adult) with one dog: $10. For more information, call 660.562.3333.

Parents and families of Northwest Missouri State University students will gather for a weekend of entertainment, athletic events and family fun as the University celebrates its annual Family Weekend, Sept. 23-25.

The weekend's highlights include free entertainment, the annual Alumni Awards Banquet and a football game against Fort Hays State. Festivities surrounding the football game include the Bearcat Zone tailgate and the halftime introduction of the Northwest Family of the Year.

Families may reserve tickets in advance by registering online. Registration forms should be completed by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. Students may charge tickets to their Bearcat Cards or by using a credit or debit card. Cash payments must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 to allow time for processing.

Tickets will be available for pickup between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., beginning Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Office of Campus Activities.

All Family Weekend events are open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Times are subject to change.

Family of the Year nominations

Each year, Northwest recognizes a family who best represents the "Bearcat Family" and demonstrates a strong commitment to Northwest. The 2011 Family of the Year is selected from submitted applications and announced during the pregame of the football game Saturday, Sept. 24. The family receives a $750 scholarship and other prizes.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. One application is allowed per student. The family must be present to accept the award.

 

Alumni Awards Banquet  

Seven distinguished members of the Northwest family will be honored during the Alumni Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Northwest Alumni Association. The event begins with a 6 p.m. social Friday, Sept. 23, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom. A dinner begins at 6:45 p.m. and the awards presentation starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets cost $30 per person or $200 for a table of eight. Reservations will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 9, on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year's honorees are Kevin Fullerton, Dr. John Baker, Dorothy Walker, Doug Sutton, Jim Blackford, Allison Kreifels and Dr. Conrad Woolsey.

Football game

Kickoff time for the Bearcats' football game against Fort Hays State is set for 1 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium. The Bearcat Zone, Northwest's tailgate area prior to all home football games, gets under way at 11 a.m. at the Raymond J. Courter College Park Pavilion.

This year's game will include tributes to the late Scott Bostwick as well as the halftime recognition of the Northwest Family of the Year.

Fans also can catch play-by-play action on the Bearcat Radio Network, the online internet webcasts or by purchasing live video streaming through B2 Networks and the MIAA.
