MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University announced the naming of Michael Johnson as its vice president of university advancement today.

Johnson, who will leave his role as assistant vice president of alumni relations at the University of Northern Colorado, has 26 years of experience in higher education, which includes 16 years of university advancement experience and 10 years in university communications.

Prior to his work at Northern Colorado, Johnson was director of alumni relations at Northwest from 1995 to 2004. He also was operations manager of Northwest's radio station and NPR affiliate, KXCV/KRNW, from 1985 to 1995.

Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in mass communication from Northwest in 1985.

"We are pleased to have Mike return to his Bearcat home," Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said. "He is a consummate example of being an engaged member of the Bearcat family and carrying on the tradition and pride of Bearcat Nation. Mike is already well connected to so many of our Northwest alumni and friends, and we look forward to him leading in a high expectation, collaborative team approach in advancing Northwest Missouri State University."

Johnson began his tenure at Northern Colorado in 2004 as the school's executive director of alumni relations, leading the alumni association, board of directors and alumni relations staff. In 2007, he was named vice president of alumni and donor relations before taking on his current role in 2010.

At Northern Colorado, Johnson increased membership, roles, responsibilities and participation of the Alumni Association Board of Directors; advanced alumni programs and services; prioritized outreach and engagement; elevated alumni engagement; reinstituted the Student Alumni Association; and enhanced volunteer recruitment. He also served to increase philanthropy and participated in the preliminary planning for a funding campaign.

He begins his new role at Northwest Aug. 15.

"We are excited to return to our alma mater," Johnson said. "My family and I are ready to embark on this wonderful professional opportunity and a chance to make a difference to current and future Bearcats through philanthropy and alumni engagement."
