MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Alumni Magazine, distributed twice a year to more than 50,000 Northwest Missouri State University alumni and friends, recently received the APEX 2011 Award of Excellence.
The APEX Annual Awards for Publication Excellence is an international awards program recognizing excellence in publications work by professional communicators.
This year, more than 3,300 entries were submitted. The Northwest Alumni Magazine was among 54 Award of Excellence winners for magazines and journals consisting of 32 pages or more. Other winners in that same category include alumni magazines from Arizona State University, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Alabama.
John DeLellis, editor and publisher of Communication Concepts, the company that sponsors the competition, said the APEX Awards are based on excellence in editorial content, graphic design and the ability to achieve overall communications effectiveness and excellence.
Mitzi Craft, Northwest's chief public relations officer, has served as the magazine's editor since the publication's inception in 2000. In addition, Northwest graphic designer Melinda Kelsey is the magazine's designer and Darren Whitley is the photographer.
"I consider myself very fortunate to be associated with the Northwest Alumni Magazine. I've met some fascinating alumni through the years, and I like to think I've played a part in reconnecting thousands of people with Northwest, their alma mater," Craft said. "We have a great team who pulls this publication together, and without their expertise and dedication, the alumni magazine wouldn't receive such honors."
The Northwest Alumni Magazine also received the APEX Award of Excellence in 2007.
