Horace Mann Laboratory School enrollment begins June 1

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Horace Mann Laboratory School at Northwest Missouri State University is conducting open enrollment, in conjunction with the start of its summer session, which begins Monday, June 6.

Parents are invited to enroll their children from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, through Friday, June 3, in the Horace Mann office.

"Horace Mann is an active, connected and collaborative learning environment that allows children to advance academically and reach new heights in their education," the school's director, Monica Landess, said. "Students receive differentiated and one-on-one instruction daily."

The school, located centrally on campus in the Everett W. Brown Education Hall, offers year-round school for students in grades first through sixth. The school's summer schedule is 7:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The traditional school year runs from August through May from 7:50 a.m. to 3 p.m. After-school care, known as Bearcat Club, also is offered.

As an integral component of Northwest's teacher education program, Horace Mann emphasizes a "Together We Can" attitude with an unwavering focus on student success - every student, every day. Learning experiences are designed to stimulate each child's creative learning abilities and problem-solving skills.

Offering a core curriculum and working in concert with the University, Horace Mann offers many unique learning opportunities for its students that include guitar lessons, the study of robotics, lessons about crops and animals at the University farm, and Spanish and sign language lessons. Additionally, students from Taiwan, Ethiopia, China and India are part of the school's diverse atmosphere.

Parents of students also are encouraged to participate in their child's progress every step of the way. In addition to classroom blogs and activities throughout the year, parent involvement opportunities include the parent advisory council, a Thanksgiving dinner, field trips and an adopt-a-family program.

Horace Mann is part of the Early Care and Education Laboratory Center, which operates in Northwest's Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
