MARYVILLE, Mo. - Six Northwest Missouri State University graduates and an adjunct instructor were recognized April 20 during the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual Excellence in Education banquet.

The event at the KCI Expo Center drew more than 750 people representing 10 school districts, 10 universities and two counties in Kansas City's northland region. The annual banquet acknowledges the role education plays in economic development and quality of life in the region. It also honors outstanding students, teachers, staff, volunteers and business supporters of education in the northland. 

Each of the recipients from Northwest was enrolled at the University's Kansas City Center in Liberty. Those honorees were:

  • Breann Fish (Park Hill Early Childhood Education Center): Award for Excellence in Service to Education
  • Chris Wohlford (Smithville High School): Award for Excellence in Service to Education
  • Amy Sparks (Kearney High School): Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching
  • Ann Lachowitzer (St. Therese): Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching
  • Nichole Oothoudt (Plaza Middle School in Park Hill): Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching
  • Dennis Pieper (Smithville Middle School): Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching

Excellence in Service to Education awards are presented to secretaries, bus drivers, custodians, principals, food service staff, librarians, nurses, counselors and other staff members who provide services outside of the classroom.

Excellence in Classroom Teaching awards are presented to teachers who may specialize in traditional classroom instruction, special needs, art, music or physical education.

In addition, Dr. Dee Moore, adjunct instructor at Northwest's Kansas City Center, received an Award for Excellence in Higher Education, which is presented to outstanding instructors, professors or administrative staff members who have made a significant commitment to education.  

Northwest's Kansas City Center, located at Blue Jay Tower Plaza, 8 Victory Lane, in Liberty, offers graduate programs in curriculum and instruction; educational leadership; health, physical education, recreation and dance; instructional technology; and the master of business administration. Additionally, the center works with Condensed Curriculum International Inc. to offer programs for people seeking certification in medical billing and coding or pharmacy technician.
