Aaron Shafer wins art contest to design Computer User’s Guide cover
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Aaron Shafer, a graphic design major from Memphis, Mo., won the 2011 Information Systems "Take the Challenge" Computer User's Guide Cover Art Contest.
The cover art contest aims to draw attention to the User's Guide, which provides students with important information about campus computing resources, guidelines and policies, and to give students professional experience in the design field, which they can use to enhance their portfolios and resumes.
Sixteen student designers submitted covers to this year's art contest. The submissions were critiqued and voted on by a panel of judges that included representatives from the fine arts department, the computer science and information systems department, the office of University Advancement and the Center for Information Technology in Education.
Judges narrowed the submissions to three potential covers belonging to Shaffer, Larissa Keller and Jared Hunter. Shaffer was declared the overall winner while Larissa Keller received first place and Jared Hunter was awarded second place.
Shaffer's cover will be used for the front cover of the "2011-2012 Computer User's Guide," which has a distribution of about 1,700 and is given free-of-charge to all incoming freshman, select faculty and administrative staff.
As the winner of the cover art contest, Shaffer will have his name listed in the acknowledgements section and on the back cover of the User's Guide. Shaffer also will receive a certificate of accomplishment along with a USB flash drive, two cover flats and two finished copies of the User's Guide for his portfolio.
