Events planned to celebrate Black History Month
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University will commemorate Black History Month this year with a series of events that include lectures, banquets and movies.
Northwest's Office of Campus Activities and Intercultural and International Center are partnering to sponsor the activities, which begin Thursday, Feb. 3 with a performance by spoken word artist Sonya Renee and continue through the end of the month with the Fourth Annual Celebration Dinner sponsored by Students Taking Action Through Service Feb. 27.
Celebrated each February, Black History Month celebrates individuals and events in the history of the African American culture. Black History Month was founded as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. The goal of Black History Week was to educate blacks about their cultural background and instill in them a sense of pride in their race. Since 1976, it is celebrated annually in the United States.
"At Northwest, the month's activities are designed so all students, faculty and staff members can celebrate and learn more about the African American culture," said Angel McAdams Prescott, director of campus activities. "The Office of Campus Activities is excited to be partnering with several student groups from the Intercultural and International Center this year to coordinate the month's activities. Interculturalism is an important part of the Northwest culture and participating in these activities not only allows our entire community to support our African American students but also learn more about the African American culture."
