Community invited to Northwest Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony Nov. 30

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Local residents are invited to join the Northwest Missouri State University community Tuesday, Nov. 30, for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting on the lawn of the Thomas Gaunt House.

The event, hosted by the Jasinski family, will begin at 5:15 p.m. Guests will be invited inside the Gaunt House afterward for refreshments.

The program will include remarks from Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski and his family, Student Senate President Quentin Templeton and Maryville Mayor Chad Jackson.

David Weichinger, Nodaway County director for Community Services, and Rod Shain, food pantry director for The Ministry Center, will be on hand to accept donations collected at Northwest.

The Spirit and Truth Gospel Choir, led by Northwest student Elise Jones, and the Horace Mann Bearcat Choir, directed by Vanessa Parsons, also will perform. In addition, the tree will be decorated with ornaments made by children in Erin Oehler's art classes at Horace Mann.

In conjunction with the tree lighting, families are encouraged to donate new or gently used coats or jackets, blankets, socks, winter boots, gloves, mittens and scarves toward Northwest's Project Holiday Hope initiative. Canned goods and dry boxed items also are needed.

Donations can be placed in the yellow collection bins located throughout the Northwest campus, and the clothing drive will culminate with the tree-lighting ceremony Nov. 30. The University also is accepting monetary donations; checks should be written payable to "Community Services" and mailed to Gina Bradley, University Event Coordinator, 220 Administration Building, Maryville, MO 64468.

More than 150 people attended last year's tree-lighting ceremony at the Gaunt House, the historic structure on the south edge of campus that serves as the presidential residence.
