MARYVILLE, Mo. - Students, employees, alumni and visitors to Northwest Missouri State University are being greeted by a new digital marquee at the campus's main entrance thanks to gifts from five senior classes.
The senior classes at Northwest from 2005 through 2009 raised funds for the marquee, which was recently completed at the entrance on Fourth Street and University Drive.
Northwest will dedicate the new sign with representatives of the senior classes during a brief ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, prior to the University's Homecoming Parade.
Northwest's Student Senate unanimously approved the first contribution toward the marquee in February 2006, and other senior classes followed. Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Jackie Elliott said she is pleased to see the students' goals for the project become a reality.
"This project is extremely important in that it represents our students giving back to the University," Elliott said. "The classes of 2005 through 2009 have given us this gift signifying how Northwest, as the Electronic Campus, made a significant impact on their time as students. We made a promise to our students that we would follow up on what they committed, and I am so honored to help bring this project to fruition for them."
The brick marquee stands 11 feet tall and measures 13 1/2 feet wide. A stone cap is engraved with "Est. 1905" to mark the year of Northwest's founding. An 8-by-4 foot LED video display screen mounted on the marquee will project messages about Northwest Missouri State news, upcoming events and other information.
Construction on the sign began in early September. Holtman Masonry, of Maryville, built the marquee, while all other work on the project, including design and electrical work, was completed by Northwest staff. South Dakota-based electronic display manufacturer Daktronics won the bid for the LED sign.
Kara Ferguson (2005), Erica Gutelius (2006), Andrea Garcia (2007), Amanda Preston (2008) and Ben Shattuck (2009) served as presidents of classes that funded the marquee.
The previous granite sign that stood at the Northwest entrance for decades was removed and will be installed at a yet-to-be-determined campus location.
