Northwest Homecoming Oct. 24-30 will be a 'Blast From the Past'
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University students, employees, alumni and friends will celebrate Homecoming Oct. 24-30 with a "Blast From the Past."
The week's worth of Homecoming events are highlighted Saturday, Oct. 30, with the annual parade and the Bearcat football game against Fort Hays State. Kickoff for the game is 2 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium, and pregame activities begin at noon at the Bearcat Zone in College Park.
The parade begins at 9 a.m. at the corner of Ray and College avenues. The route will proceed east to Market and Fourth streets. A "family friendly" viewing area will be set up on campus near the intersection of University Drive and Fourth Street where bleachers will be provided. The parade is expected to feature more than 100 entries, including floats sponsored by campus and community organizations, bands and area political candidates.
Businesses, groups and individuals not affiliated with the University who would like to participate in the parade should contact Angel McAdams Prescott at 660.562.1226 or email@example.com. The entry deadline is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22.
The Homecoming Welcome prior to the parade, with free refreshments, begins at 8 a.m. at the Alumni House, and a dedication ceremony for the University's new marquee entrance sign is set for 8:30 a.m. at the main entrance to campus on Fourth Street.
In other athletics events Saturday, the soccer team will play Nebraska-Omaha at 11:30 a.m. at Bearcat Pitch, and the volleyball team will take on Southwest Baptist at 5:30 p.m. at Bearcat Arena.
In accordance with longstanding Northwest tradition, there will be no classes Friday, Oct. 29, known as Walkout Day.
Friday's events include the ringing of the Bell of '48 at 11:00 a.m. just south of the Administration Building; the Golden Years Society Reunion honoring the class of 1960, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Alumni House; the Student Activities Council's Walkout Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Colden Pond; the Homecoming Golf Classic at noon at Mozingo Lake Golf Course; the flag-raising ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Joyce and Harvey White International Plaza; and the M-Club Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.
The Homecoming student Variety Show begins its two-night run at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 and Friday, Oct. 29, in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $5 for orchestra seating and $3 for balcony seating.
The 2010 Homecoming royalty will be crowned during Thursday night's Variety Show at about 9 p.m.
Campus departments are invited to participate in Department Decoration Contest Monday, Oct. 25. The winning department will receive a catered lunch. Second- and third- place winners will receive catered refreshments. Judging will take place Monday, and winners will be announced later in week. Departments interested in participating should register by sending an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22.
Additionally, the fourth annual Canned Art Contest will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, in the J.W. Jones Student Union. Organizations are encouraged to purchase canned food items to create an artistic display. The canned items will be donated to the Ministry Center after the contest.
The Homecoming Committee is sponsoring a 5k Run/Walk Sunday, Oct. 24. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Raymond J. Courter College Park Pavilion with the race beginning at 9:30 a.m. Entry is $10, which includes a T-shirt and all proceeds will benefit the Maryville community. Homecoming 2010 activities end Sunday, Oct. 31, with a 1 p.m. awards ceremony at the Charles Johnson Theatre in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building.
