Bearcat Heroes working to turn ideas into action

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Bearcat Heroes, a student organization founded in March, is raising awareness about the American Red Cross on the campus and in the community with events and fundraisers aimed at assisting with disaster relief locally and globally.

The Bearcat Heroes for the American Red Cross is a service-oriented organization founded at Northwest to give students, faculty and community members opportunities to volunteer, raise funds and host events for the Red Cross. Proceeds go to the area Red Cross located in St. Joseph, disaster relief funds and lend support where it's needed in the community.

More than 250 Northwest students have pledged to volunteer. Members also gain experience in fundraising, event planning and leadership.

"I am really excited about Bearcat Heroes for the American Red Cross," newly elected Vice President Joseph Landrum, a junior marine biology major from Westphalia, Mo., said. "Bringing such an amazing organization to Northwest will open up new doors to the community and create opportunities for all of us to spread the word about the Red Cross. It's time to give back to them for all they do for our community."

Membership is open to all students and the organization meets once a month. The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11 on the third floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union in Meeting Room D.
