The blood drive will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday in the J.W. Jones Student Union Tower View room. Donors can sign up between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. today and Monday, Sept. 27 on the first floor of the Union for appointments or online by going to www.savealifenow.org and using the sponsor code "nwmsu."
Tamera Dunn, Student Senate civic service co-chair, learned about the importance of donating the blood after she tore her ACL while playing intramural sports and needed a blood transfusion during surgery.
"As an individual who has received a blood transfusion while a college student here at Northwest, I am glad to see the Northwest community being so proactive regarding a simple activity that truly can save a life," Dunn said. "Student Senate does a great job of finding simple ways for everyone to be able to give back, and the blood drives throughout the year are an excellent example of something that everyone can support."
Montanna Benson, a Northwest freshman, has made a habit of donating blood since she was 15 years old and she plans to participate in the Student Senate blood drive as well. Recently, Benson, who donates blood regularly at First United Methodist Church in Maryville, earned the Gallon Grad award for donating at least eight times before she graduated high school.
"My mom donated blood for as long as I can remember so in my house it was just something you did," Benson said. Acknowledging that donating blood makes some people uneasy, Benson recommended going to the blood drive with a friend who is familiar with donating.
Donors should drink plenty of fluids and eat a healthy meal before donating blood. The Alyx machine, which allows donors to give only red blood cells, also will be available. Donors should plan on the process taking about one hour.
Student Senate blood drives are coordinated with the Community Blood Center, which is the sole supplier of St. Francis Hospital in Maryville.
Anyone with questions about medical eligibility should call 800.245.7035 or ask at the blood drive table in the Student Union. For more information about the Blood Drive, contact Dunn at 660.562.1218 or at email@example.com.
