Northwest student is ambassador for state, agriculture as Missouri State Fair queen
MARYVILLE, Mo. - As an elementary education major and student ambassador at Northwest, Megan Westhoff shares her experiences at the University with countless students. Now she'll be talking up the attributes of the Missouri State Fair and agriculture, too.
Westhoff, 20, of Memphis, Mo., was crowned the 2010 Missouri State Fair queen on Aug. 13. She received the highest score out of 60 contestants in the competition. The contestants were judged on interviews, speech and talent, and evening gown.
While Westhoff grew up attending the State Fair, she said she competed for queen to earn scholarship money. As Missouri State Fair queen, Westhoff received a $1,500 scholarship.
"I've grown up participating and attending the state fair, and I wanted to give back to it," she said. "Representing the Missouri State Fair is a lot more than wearing a crown and sash. It's a year-long job as ambassador of the Missouri State Fair and promoting Missouri agriculture. It's something I'm very passionate about. I grew up in a rural area and raised sheep and chicken, so it's also something I'm prepared for."
Westhoff has shown sheep at the State Fair since she was 7 and participated in beef cattle demonstrations. She also is an active member of 4-H and FFA and was Missouri State FFA Officer. Those experiences, she said, sparked her passion for agriculture, talking about it and helping people understand the issues farmers face.
As a Northwest student, Westhoff said she also hopes to "get some more green" at the State Fair. She said she hopes to increase awareness about northwest Missouri's contributions to the state's agriculture and encourage individual participation in the State Fair.
"Nodaway County and this part of the state are very well represented at the State Fair with junior exhibitors who show livestock and participate in various competitions," she said. "I see this as a tremendous opportunity to educate people who don't go to the fair."
A junior elementary education major, Westhoff is working on a double minor in special education and early childhood special education. She is an executive officer in Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, a student ambassador and freshman peer advisor.
Said Westhoff of her decision to attend Northwest, "I am a small town girl. I'm a people person. I like seeing your face when I'm talking to you and Northwest is the perfect place to do all those things."
