University Police to offer Combat Cats Camp on Wednesday nights this summer

MARYVILLE, Mo. - After successful sessions earlier this month, Northwest Missouri State's Combat Cats Camp is returning in the form of weekly, two-hour sessions.

Combat Cats CampThe Combat Cats Camp will be 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Wednesday, starting June 30 and continuing throughout July, in the Environmental Services Building, located on Ninth Street.

The camp is geared toward boys and girls, ages 10 to 15 years old. Registration costs $15 per participant and includes a T-shirt.

Participants can register at the door, but space is limited to 12 participants per night so parents are encouraged to register early. Participants also must have a parent's signature on the registration form.

Youth will receive instruction on awareness and how to avoid ways other people might hurt them, including sexual contact and bullying. They will learn appropriate responses to other people's bad behavior and work on escape techniques.

Participants will learn as a group and receive individual training on specific techniques. University Police Department personnel will assist with the training.

"These camps will stimulate the participants to be more proactive about their welfare," Martinez said. "I hope they will leave believing that no one has a right to hurt them and they have a right to defend themselves."

Martinez added, "I also hope this camp will empower them to seek help when they are being hurt by someone, and not just handle it alone. We will stress that they can and should tell someone when they are being threatened or hurt by other people's bad behavior."

Proceeds will be used to purchase equipment for Northwest self-defense programs.
