Editors selected for Northwest's 2010-11 student publications

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State's Student Publications Department recently named its editors for the 2010-11 Tower Yearbook and The Northwest Missourian.

Alexandria Richard, a freshman from Overland Park, Kan., majoring in art with a studio emphasis in photography, has been named editor of Tower Yearbook. For The Northwest Missourian, Brittany Keithley, a junior journalism major from Falls City, Neb., has been named editor-in-chief, and Jason Lawrence, a sophomore journalism major from Independence, Mo., has been named managing editor.

"It's exciting as they put their staffs together," Director of Student Publications Laura Widmer said. "Allie's hard work and attitude and leadership were exceptional this past year, and she brings great ideas and a great staff to the Tower. With Brittany, she has innovative ideas on how to bring student media together in a converged environment, how to expand coverage, and improve the newspaper and the online version."

Richard said she looks forward to the hands-on learning experience of being the Tower editor.

"I am really excited and honored to have been hired," Richard said. "I hope I can keep a level head and produce a great book with the help of staff to represent Tower and student publications."

Keithley said she wants to help mold The Missourian into a multimedia publication that merges the newspaper and broadcast staffs.

"We're just really looking forward to next year and taking The Missourian far beyond the places it's been," Keithley said. "We're taking our web content so much farther."

Tower has received an All-American rating from the Associated Collegiate Press for 15 consecutive years and has been inducted into its hall of fame. The 300-page publication gives students the opportunity to plan the theme, write, edit, take photographs and design. Tower also produces a CD-ROM edition as a supplement to the yearbook.

The Missourian is a weekly, citywide newspaper that covers the city of Maryville and the Northwest campus. Students who work on The Missourian are responsible for all writing, photography, editing, advertising and design. The Associated Collegiate Press has ranked The Missourian in the top 1 percent of all college newspapers in the country. The newspaper also can be accessed online at

Editors are selected by mass communications department faculty based on applications, letters of recommendation and interviews.
