Student journalists win awards at state, national conventions

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Students who have worked on Northwest's student publications recently claimed numerous awards at the Missouri College Media Association and Columbia Scholastic Press Association conventions.

During the annual MCMA convention April 10 in Lee's Summit, five Northwest students took first place awards in yearbook categories, while three students earned first place awards in newspaper categories. Northwest's weekly newspaper, The Northwest Missourian, took third place in the sweepstakes category, in addition to honorable mentions for advertising and a special edition.

At the CSPA convention, held annually during March in New York, members of the 2008-2009 Tower staff claimed 18 awards in various categories, including design and photography.

"It was reflective that there were awards given in reporting, design photography and advertising," Director of Student Publications Laura Widmer said. "I thought that was a good representation of the strengths of The Missourian staff this year. The yearbook was solid from top to bottom."

The recognition came on top of other recent honors for the Students Publications advertising department. Students on The Northwest Missourian and the Student Publications Advertising Department earned third place for Best Display Ad Campaign Northwest's Student Employee of the Year. from the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers, Inc. Convention on March 27 in Los Angeles. Kristy N. Thompson, the advertising sales manager and senior sales account executive in the Student Publications Advertising Department, also was selected as

Tower yearbook has received an All-American rating from the Associated Collegiate Press for 15 consecutive years and has been inducted into its hall of fame. The 300-page publication gives students the opportunity to plan the theme, write, edit, take photographs and design. Tower also produces a CD-ROM edition as a supplement to the yearbook.

The Missourian is a weekly, citywide newspaper that covers the city of Maryville and the Northwest campus. Students who work on The Missourian are responsible for all writing, photography, editing, advertising and design. The Associated Collegiate Press has ranked The Missourian in the top 1 percent of all college newspapers in the country. The newspaper also can be accessed online at http://www.nwmissourinews.com/.
