MARYVILLE, Mo.- The Northwest Missouri State Board of Regents on Thursday approved the hire of Monica S. Landess, a Northwest alumna, as the director of the Horace Mann Laboratory School on the Northwest campus.
Landess will begin her tenure on Aug. 23, filling the role of RoAnne Solheim, who has served as interim director for the last two years.
"We are delighted to welcome Ms. Landess to the College of Education and Human Services and the Northwest family," said Dr. Max Ruhl, dean of the college. "She brings significant experience to this important role and background in early childhood education, and a strong record of leadership. I believe her vision and the energy she brings to leadership will propel the Horace Mann Laboratory School to the next level."
Landess, a St. Joseph resident, presently is elementary principal in the Stewartsville C-2 School District, where she has served since 2005. Previously, Landess was an elementary and preschool teacher at Webster Elementary School, and owner and teacher at Huny Tree Preschool, both in St. Joseph. Landess also served as adjunct professor for introduction to early childhood at Missouri Western State University from 2000 to 2004.
Among her honors, in 2008, she was named Distinguished New Elementary Principal for the Northwest Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals. She also was named 2002-2003 Innovator of the Year by the St. Joseph School District.
Landess earned her bachelor's in early childhood and elementary education from Northwest in 1984. She earned a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002.
Ruhl also expressed appreciation to Solheim for her "exceptional efforts and dedicated service as interim director," noting her simultaneous leadership of the Early Care and Education Laboratory Center at Horace Mann. Said Ruhl, "All of us owe her a debt of gratitude."
