The Faculty Handbook criteria for ranked faculty are:

  • Assistant Professor: terminal degree in the discipline; ability in teaching, scholarship, student support, and service appropriate to the discipline.
  • Associate Professor: terminal degree; six years in rank at a regionally accredited institution and three years in rank at NW; demonstrated and sustained record of effective teaching, scholarship, student support, and service appropriate to the discipline.
  • Full Professor: terminal degree; five years in rank at a regionally accredited institution and three years in rank at Northwest; a recognized teacher/scholar with an exemplary cumulative record of teaching effectiveness, a significant record of scholarship, student support, and service.

The Faculty Handbook notes promotion and tenure reviews are two separate, albeit related, processes. For both tenure and promotion, the faculty member is evaluated in the same four categories: teaching, scholarship, student support, and service. A university level faculty advisory committee is used in the promotion review process. When considering a promotion application, only the activities and accomplishments since last promotion are considered, whereas a tenure application considers the applicant's cumulative record.
