Assistant professor Rochelle Hiatt recognized as Counseling Supervisor of the Year
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Dr. Rochelle Hiatt, assistant professor in Northwest Missouri State's psychology, sociology and counseling department, was recognized this morning by the Northwest Missouri School Counselor Association as School Counseling Supervisor of the Year.
Hiatt was honored during a ceremony at the Empower Plant in St Joseph. A group of her colleagues also surprised Hiatt by attending the ceremony, along with her son Jordan, who is a Northwest student.
Hiatt thanked members of the Northwest Missouri School Counselor Association and her colleagues in the psychology, sociology and counseling department for their support and assistance.
"It's quite humbling to receive this award from a group of your peers and to look out in the crowd and know the work that they're doing every day," Hiatt said. "I stand on the shoulders of some really great people."
Hiatt began her teaching career at Northwest in 1996 and has been director of Northwest's school counseling master's program since 1998, in addition to serving as an instructor. The size of the program has doubled in the last five years and consistently produces award-winning counselors at the regional and state levels.
Students in the master's program say they have benefitted from Hiatt's instruction.
"We are truly lucky that she is our supervisor," Amanda Hannah said.
Added Jennifer Biggar, "Shelly is inspiring and she has helped me a lot with my journey toward being a school counselor. Her knowledge of the classroom is refreshing and helpful."
Hiatt earned her doctorate is in educational leadership from Northwest. She also serves as the University's Faculty Senate secretary and Building Bridges coordinator.
Carla Edwards, chair of the psychology, sociology and counseling department, called the recognition "a great honor for a very hard working assistant professor."
"She spends much time partnering and working with local schools and school counselors," Edwards said. "She is a primary force at the state level and was instrumental in building and now supporting the importance of the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program for School Counselors, which is recognized and utilized nationally. She believes in partnering and helping others."
The NWMSCA Outstanding Guidance Director/Supervisor of the Year Award recognizes a guidance director or supervisor in the Northwest Missouri District for outstanding service achievement that has made an impact for counselors on a local, state or national level. Nominations are based on professional qualities, innovation and implementation of new programs, leadership and support.
The NWMSCA has been serving the school counseling profession of Northwest Missouri for more than 30 years. It consists of professional members who are certified or licensed school counselors possessing unique qualifications and skills to address the academic, personal, social and career development needs of all students.
