Zhang receives scholarship solely for international students
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Qian Zhang is the latest recipient of the Society of International Ambassadors Scholarship, an award created solely for Northwest Missouri State University international students.
Zhang, a senior finance major who transferred to Northwest from Shen Yang, China, received the $500 scholarship to be applied during the 2009-2010 academic year. Zhang was selected by the International Programs and Studies Committee, an advisory committee of Northwest's Faculty Senate that supports the University's international studies and study abroad offices.
As part of the committee's selection criteria the recipient must have a minimum 2.75 grade point average and be actively involved in the Northwest community. Zhang is involved in a variety of international activities on campus that help students learn about the Chinese culture, including the Asian Student Association. She has served as the international students' orientation leader as well as advised international students on class offerings and campus life. In addition, she is the Overseas Chinese College liaison between the director of international affairs and the students.
"The success of the partnership between Northwest and Overseas Chinese College is due in large part to student satisfaction," said Dr. Jeffrey Foot, Northwest's director of international affairs. "Qian has been integral in determining how we can improve their satisfaction with the academic and social adjustment that comes from moving from one institution to graduate at another."
Zhang's scholarship was made possible thanks to members of the Society of International Ambassadors, a group launched in 2005 to assist international students through the Intercultural and International Center at Northwest. Members' financial contributions have helped create a scholarship for international students who wish to continue their education at Northwest beyond their first year. Gifts to the SIA also help broaden the Celebration of Culture Series and expand the International Emergency Fund. It is the only scholarship at Northwest that exists solely for international students.
The IIC provides leadership and assistance to groups and individuals in the surrounding community on issues dealing with cultural enrichment, curriculum development, international education and study abroad, recruitment, retention and policymaking.
