MARYVILLE, Mo.- The men of Northwest and surrounding communities are being invited to strap on a pair of high heels this month to help women combat assault and sexual violence.
The annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event is scheduled for March 18. All men who are interested in participating should pick up an application in Northwest's campus activities office. The deadline to register is 5 p.m. Thursday, March 11.
There is a $12 participation fee, which includes a T-shirt and barbecue lunch catered by Hy-vee. Area women also are being encouraged to donate heels for the event.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is an international men's march to educate communities about the effects of rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
At Northwest, the Safe Spring Break BBQ and "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18 at the Bell Tower. It is co-sponsored by the Wellness Center and Interfraternity Council.
Participants will start at the Bell Tower and march around the Northwest campus in their heels, while getting an idea of what it's like to walk in a woman's shoes. Spectators no doubt will have fun watching the men stumble and fall, noted James Ford, a Northwest student helping to organize the event, but the message of the event is a serious one.
"It's a good way for our men on campus to get involved with showing that we care about the women in the community - those who have been physically assaulted or verbally assaulted - and we can stand up for women," said Ford, a sophomore corporate finance major from Odessa, Mo.
