Tickets for "Hairspray" go on sale Feb. 8
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Tickets go on sale Monday (Feb. 8) for "Hairspray," the fantastically-fun broadway musical about a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart.
The show is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $23-$25 for adults, $13-$15 for children and $8-$10 for students. They can be purchased between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Student Services Desk on the first floor of the Administration Building.
In "Hairspray," the stage is transformed into 1962 Baltimore, where the '50s are out and change is in the air. Overnight, the city is turned upside-down when plus-sized teenager Tracy Turnblad wins a spot on "The Corny Collins Show," a local TV dance program, and turns herself into an irrepressible teen celebrity.
On her way to becoming a trendsetter in dance and fashion, Tracy works to vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a television show without denting her 'do.
The laughter and romance reach bouffant-high with enough deliriously tuneful songs to fill a non-stop platter party. Clive Barnes of the New York Post called the show "a great big fat gorgeous hit," and Jeremy Gerard of New York Magazine said, "So many numbers bring down the house, it's a wonder the theater is still standing."
"Hairspray" is based on the 1988 New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, who served as a creative consultant on the musical comedy. A 2007 remake starred big-time actors including John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah and Zac Efron.
During a six-year Broadway run that ended in 2009 after more than 2,500 performances, "Hairspray" won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.
