Partnership results in creation of a master's program cohort

Representatives from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. in St. Joseph and Northwest Missouri State University will formally sign a Memorandum of Agreement at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at the Northwest St. Joseph Center. The agreement, which builds on Northwest's longstanding tradition of providing graduate education in the St. Joseph area, will result in Northwest tailoring the delivery method of its Master of Science in Biology degree program to fit the needs of BIVI staff scientists.

Participating in the Nov. 30 event are Dr. John Jasinski, Northwest president; Dr. Charles A. McAdams, dean of Northwest's College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Bernd Eichenmueller, BIVI executive director of vaccine production and process development; and Dan Nowalk, BIVI executive director of human resources and public relations.

As a result of the agreement, which was approved by Northwest's Board of Regents at its Oct. 29 meeting, courses will be offered in a variety of methods, including instruction at the Northwest St. Joseph Center as well as online, at Northwest's Maryville campus and through blended instruction. BIVI representatives have agreed to enroll a cohort of up to 12 students in the program, scheduled to begin in January.

Dr. Gregg Dieringer, professor of biological sciences, said Northwest currently offers a master's in biological sciences, but this 18-month program of study is aimed particularly at BIVI employees for the sake of student convenience.

"Many times it's difficult for students, such as those at BIVI, to travel to our Maryville campus to take courses, so we've put together a set of courses that are offered through a variety of delivery methods," Dieringer said. "We're also offering courses related to vaccines and molecular biology that are of particular interest to BIVI employees."

Interested BIVI employees must meet all Northwest enrollment and admissions criteria.
