Dr. Janice Brandon-Falcone, professor of history at Northwest, is the featured author of the inaugural Local Authors Luncheon.
The event, sponsored by the Bearcat Bookstore and open to the public, begins at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the J.W. Jones Student Union's Tower View Room. Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch, and complimentary beverages and desserts will be provided.
Brandon-Falcone's book, "Transitions: A Hundred Years of Northwest Missouri State University," was published in 2005 to coincide with the University's centennial celebration. The 224-page book was a two-year project for the author, and it provides a historical account - with hundreds of restored photographs - of the institution's first century. Brandon-Falcone will give a 15-minute presentation about the book followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session. The book sells for $50 and may be purchased at the luncheon.
"I've received a good bit of positive feedback about the book," Brandon-Falcone said. "I think it's a book that people can enjoy by just picking it up and opening it to any page. I also like the idea of the Local Authors Luncheon. It's a nice idea to promote the work and interests of our faculty and other local authors, and it allows us to begin some conversations outside of the classroom that will hopefully stimulate curiosity."
Scott Yocom, manager of the Bearcat Bookstore, said an event featuring local authors is a project he has wanted to assemble for several years.
"There are many local authors, both on campus and within the local community, and this gives us the opportunity to showcase their work and possibly sell a few of their books as an added bonus," he said.
Upcoming luncheons will take place in the Union's First Ladies Dining Room and include:
