Student Affairs team captures state support staff award

Four Northwest employees within the Office of Student Affairs recently received the Outstanding Support Staff Team Award from the Missouri College Personnel Association.

The honorees are: Jody Throener, residential life specialist; Shannon Heitman, residential life specialist; Nikki Bucy, auxiliary services specialist; and Sue Nickerson, executive secretary for student affairs.

Presented earlier this month at the MoCPA Support Staff Conference in Springfield, the award honors university personal who provide "superior support of student-related services and programs in the state of Missouri."

Nominees for the award included outstanding support staffers from colleges and universities throughout the state who are employed as administrative assistants, executive staff assistants, clerks, receptionists, data entry specialists and in a variety of other positions.

"This team of professionals brings a strong vision to the office that focuses on student learning," said Jackie Elliott, Northwest's vice president for student affairs, who emphasized the group's ability to train and empower student workers while improving customer and student service.

"Their vision and cooperative nature has improved efficiency in the office while allowing student employees to perform more meaningful and crucial tasks, thus enabling professional staff to focus on programming, planning and overall operations," Elliott said.

She praised the team's "unselfish collaboration" and willingness to cross-train in order to enhance student employee learning and "improve our responsiveness to customer needs and satisfaction."

Also commending the recipients was MoCPA President Ron Laue, an assistant dean for the School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.

"We offer a big congratulations to Northwest Missouri State University and the winners of the MoCPA Outstanding Support Staff Award," Laue said. "These four support staff professionals are certainly well deserving of this award for their team effort and dedication to students."

MoCPA is an association for student affairs professionals serving at institutions of higher learning statewide. Associated with the American College Personnel Association, it works to promote student learning and development and to provide members with opportunities for professional development.
