Regents pass resolution to terminate University's general counsel
The Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents met in closed session Wednesday, March 18, to consider matters pursuant to exemptions to the Missouri open meetings statute as specified in R.S. Mo 610.021(1)(3)(13).
Members present included board President Bill Loch and regents Rita Hanks, Doug Sutton, Lydia Hurst, Rachelle Brown, Dr. Douglas Wyckoff and Gary Panethiere.
According to minutes posted following the meeting, the regents passed a resolution on a 5-2 vote to terminate the contract of University General Counsel and Chief of Staff Joe Cornelison, who was to be given 60 days' notice.
A second resolution authorizing the board to spend up to $5,000 in attorney's fees for examination of the contract and the decision to terminate passed unanimously.
According to the minutes, Regent Don Schneider participated via telephone at the beginning of the executive session but was no longer on the line when the vote was taken.
Cornelison, a lawyer and former U.S. Army officer, has served as Northwest's general counsel since Oct. 2005.
