One of the most popular contemporary rock bands in the country, Boys Like Girls was formed in 2005 when Boston-based singer/guitarist Martin Johnson recruited bassist Bryan Donahue and drummer John Keefe to record some original songs. Keefe brought along lead guitarist Paul DiGiovanni to complete the line-up.

On the strength of early versions of the soon-to-be hit singles "The Great Escape" and "Thunder," the group soon landed the No. 1 spot on the PureVolume Web site's Top Unsigned Artists chart.

After the acquiring an agent and a producer, the band began to tour nationally and landed a recording deal with Columbia Records/Red Ink.

In late summer 2006, the eponymous "Boys Like Girls" arrived in stores, and the album went gold, selling more than 580,000 copies in the United States. Besides "The Great Escape" and "Thunder," the 12-track disc produced the hits "Hero/Heroine" and "Heels Over Head."

The band has stayed extremely busy over the past two years, touring steadily, logging television appearances and playing their first international concerts in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Subsequent releases have included a three-song acoustic set for AOL's Sessions Under Cover as an EP in the iTunes Store containing "The Great Escape," "Thunder" and a cover of Frou Frou's "Let Go." The band's debut DVD, "Read Between the Lines" came out in fall 2008, and plans for a new CD are in the works, possibly for release early this summer.

The Boys Like Girls concert at Northwest is being sponsored by the Student Activities Council with support from KZLX (106.7 FM), Northwest's student-operated radio station; the Office of Student Publications; and the University.
