Rachel Sneed, an instrumental music education major from Smithville, has been chosen to perform during a Kansas City Symphony trumpet master class with EMI Classics recording artist Alison Balsom.
Sneed, who was selected following a competitive audition process, is a junior at Northwest and was named to the President's Honor Roll (4.0 grade-point average) following the fall 2008 trimester.
She studies trumpet under Dr. William Richardson, assistant professor of music, and will perform "Legende" by Georges Enescu as her master class selection.
The class, which is part of the Kansas City Symphony's new Masterclass series, is free and open to the public and will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, Founders' Hall, 415 West 13th Street in Kansas City. Those wishing to attend can make reservations, which are required, by calling 816.218.2609.
Raised and educated in England, Balsom is one of the most acclaimed young trumpet virtuosos on the international music scene. She released her first EMI Classics recording in 2002 and recently completed her fourth solo CD for the iconic label.
Balsom is currently a member of BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme, under whose auspices she has given concerts with the BBC Symphony and Sir Andrew Davis and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
She is scheduled to appear with the Kansas City Symphony at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the Lyric Theatre in Kansas City. For tickets, go to www.kcsymphony.org .
