Mathematics Olympiad

The 42nd ANNUAL MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems at Northwest Missouri State University, will be held on

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Last year's Mathematics Olympiad was a success with students coming from Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa. Our university and department are proud to have the opportunity to serve area schools and students through the Olympiad again this year.

Enclosed you will find a packet containing the rules governing the Olympiad, a schedule for the day, and a map of the campus. These items can be found on the department website also.

To help us be best prepared, we prefer that you register online by 5 p.m. on March 17, 2013. If you are unable to register before that, you may do so at the registration desk the day of the Olympiad.

We are thrilled to have Alicia Dwyer Cianciolo as our Olympiad speaker this year. Ms. Cianciolo is an aerospace engineer at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.  She has a bachelor's degree in Physics from Creighton University and a master’s in Mechanical Engineering from The George Washington University.  Her work focuses on the flight of spacecraft at different planets in our solar system.  She has worked on several missions to Mars over the past 12 years including the Odyssey Orbiter, the Exploration Rovers, Reconnaissance Orbiter and, most recently, was a member of the Entry, Decent and Landing Team that successfully landed the Curiosity Rover on Mars last August. Thanks to Internet, she works from her home near St. Joseph, Missouri where she lives with her husband and their four children.

If you have any questions concerning the Olympiad that are not covered, do not hesitate to contact us at 660.562.1230 or ameyer@nwmissouri.edu. We look forward to seeing you and your students at the 2013 Mathematics Olympiad.

Sincerely,

Phil Heeler, Chair
Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems
