Mathematics Olympiad

The 43rd ANNUAL MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Northwest Missouri State University, will be held on

Thursday, March 20, 2014

Last year’s Mathematics Olympiad was a success with students coming from Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa. Our university and department are proud to have the opportunity to serve area schools and students through the Olympiad again this year.

Enclosed you will find a packet containing the rules governing the Olympiad, a schedule for the day, and a map of the campus. These items can be found on the department website also.

To help us be best prepared, we prefer that you register online by 5 p.m. on March 16, 2014. If you are unable to register before that, you may do so at the registration desk the day of the Olympiad.

We are pleased to have Rita Barger as our Olympiad speaker this year. Rita Barger is an associate professor of mathematics education and chair of the Division of Curriculum and Instructional Leadership at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). Prior to working at UMKC, she served as a mathematics classroom teacher in the Hickman Mills School District in Kansas City, teaching math at the middle and secondary levels and to gifted students in grades 2 through 12. Her interests include recreational mathematics, motivation, professional development, learning styles, and attitudes and beliefs about mathematics. She plans to speak to us about engaging students in recreational mathematics in and out of the classroom.

If you have any questions concerning the Olympiad that are not covered in the enclosed information, do not hesitate to contact us at 660.562.1230 or math@nwmissouri.edu. We look forward to seeing you and your students at the 2014 Mathematics Olympiad.

Sincerely,

Phil Heeler, Chair
Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems
