Missouri Academy

Summer Orientation

Summer Orientation takes place in May and June. All students accepted by the Missouri Academy are required to select/attend one of the Summer Orientation days in 2012 (May 18, May 19, June 1 or June 2). Summer Orientation serves two primary purposes: (1) to familiarize the student and his/her family with the Missouri Academy staff, facilities, and procedures, and (2) to enable the Missouri Academy staff to learn more about individual students. Information collected about individual students will be used by the Missouri Academy staff to provide targeted services for the students. Some general expectations and procedures for the Summer Orientation are as follows:

  • The student and at least one parent/guardian are required to attend one of the Summer Orientation days.
  • Prior to Summer Orientation, the Secretary for Student Development will mail out a letter (to the student) containing forms that are required to be filled out and submitted to the Missouri Academy. Included with this letter will be the newest version of the Student-Parent Handbook - it is hoped that the prospective student and his/her parent will read this Handbook and can turn in the Handbook Acceptance page at the Summer Orientation Day.
  • The forms that are to be turned in with the enrollment acceptance form are:
    • Housing Contract
    • Housing pre-pay ($150)
    • Health History/Meningococcal Vaccination Requirement/Copy of Immunization Record
    • Completed FAFSA
    • Permission to Treat
    • Photocopy of Insurance Card
    • Health History Form
    • General Permissions
    • Statement of Financial Responsibility

    • MOERA Challenge Course parental consent
    • Agreement to Participate

    • Proof of Guardianship (birth certificate, divorce decree, adoption papers, any other legal documents regarding custody...)
  • Forms that are to be submitted at Summer Orientation Day are:
    • Permission to Administer Medications
    • Self-Administration of Medications
    • Medication List
    • Transportation and Visitor Permissions
    • Student/Parent Information (directory info)
    • Shuttle Request form
    • Handbook Acceptance Form
  • The morning half of the Summer Orientation day is usually filled with speakers/presentations:
    • Welcome/Introductions
    • Financial Information
    • Academics
    • Health Center and Counseling Issues (for parents/families)
    • Residential Life Issues
  • Lunch is then provided for all new students and their families
  • After lunch, family interview sessions and placement testing is done:
    • During the family session, students and their parent(s) are assigned to a Missouri Academy staff member and they meet with them for an hour. During the first 20 minutes, the student meets with the staff member alone, during the second 20 minutes, the parent(s) meet with the staff member and the student leaves the room, during the final 20 minutes, everyone meets together.
    • All students will take two placement tests to determine which section of Chemistry and Calculus they should be placed in:
      • Mathematics Placement Test - this test is used to determine whether the student will start in Pre-Calculus or Calculus I
      • Chemistry Placement Test - this test is used to determine whether the student will start in Chemistry I or Chemistry II
    • When family interview sessions and placement tests are completed, students and their families will have an opportunity to tour North Complex (the Missouri Academy residence hall)
  • The following activities will occur between Summer Orientation day and Move-In Day:
    • Complete and mail any remaining Summer Orientation forms to the Missouri Academy
    • Make sure the sending school sent the final transcript
    • The Director of Student Development will make room assignments and communicate with each student their room number, roommate name, roommate contact information, RC name and contact information, move-in date and time. It is important for students to contact their roommates to work out issues such as who will bring the phone, refrigerator, etc.
    • Students and their parents should spend this time getting the items that are necessary for their student to live on campus (extra-long (78'') twin size sheets work best, back pack, school supplies, food, toiletries, laundry supplies, etc.)
